Ni Hao Kai-Lan Party Games and Activities

  • Chinese Dragon Craft - Pre-cut out the head and tail of a Chinese dragon (use card stock paper). Use white paper for the middle of the dragon and fold it like a fan. Glue the head and tail to the middle of the dragon. Attach Popsicle sticks to the head and tail with glue or a strong tape. Color the dragon with markers.
  • Tangram Puzzles - Figure out the tangram puzzles (make sure to try to make the Ni Hao Kai Lan Characters – tiger, panda, monkey, and rhino).
  • Firework Craft - Use dark navy or black construction paper. Create a design using pencil and then cover the design with glue. Then carefully cover the design with glitter and sparkles. Shake and the craft is completed. Hint – do the glitter and sparkles in a large tub or outside. Careful sparkles often get everywhere.
  • Paper bag Puppets - Make paper bag puppets of all the Ni Hao Kai-Lan characters. Not only is this fun, but the guests can then play with the puppets or put on a puppet show.
  • Chinese Bracelets - Create some Chinese bracelets. Use stretchy bracelet and necklace wire. This can often be purchased at discount stores. Then go to your local Chinese market or Chinatown to get some authentic beads. Try to find some with painted flowers, lettering, etc.
  • Lantern Making - Have your guests make their own lanterns. Take a piece of construction paper and cut slits lengthwise all the way across. Then fold the paper in half and open again. This part will then pop out one put together. Decorate the paper. Once decorated then you can roll your paper. Roll two pieces of paper, one yellow (2 inches shorter) and the other the piece of construction paper. Staple them together to make a 3d lantern.
  • Learn some Mandarin Chinese - Learn some sayings that Kai-Lan uses in her shows e.g., Ni Hao means hi or hello.
  • Tea time - Make some sugar cookies, use red cookie icing for the top and then draw on some Chinese numbers and words in white icing.
  • Pin the flowers on Kai-Lan - Create a large poster size of Kai-Lan. Have a few colors of flowers for her hair bows. Then have your guests cover their eyes with a sleeping mask, spin and try to post the hair barrettes in the right place.
  • Dragon Dancing - Learn to dance in a large dragon. These are amazing in parades and celebrations. Or you could have some smaller hand held dragons and dance with them to bring good luck.
  • Find the Pearl of Wisdom - Create a scavenger hunt for some leaded necklaces. Hide them throughout the party zone for your guests to find. Get them in all sorts of colors and try to have a few for each guest to find.
  • Wind Finder - Make a wind finder out of construction paper and streamers. Attach the streamers of different colors to construction paper. Once it is done being decorated round the construction paper and staple to keep the round shape.
  • Outdoor Fun - Have an assortment of windmill blow toys, bubbles, hula hoops, skipping ropes, etc to play with in the great outdoors. For your adventurous guests have multiple binoculars and bug catchers.
  • Green Thumb - Show off your green thumb by letting your guests plant their own flowers in individual smaller pots. Start with them scooping the dirt to fill the bottom of their pot.
